Moved In. Boxes Everywhere. An Orlando and Tampa Recycling Plan
The keys are yours, the furniture is inside, and the empty boxes are taking over. Before you push everything toward the curb, make a small unpacking plan: separate reusable boxes, prepare the cardboard you intend to recycle, and confirm the instructions for the service at your new address. The goal is a usable home—not simply moving the pile outside.
Start with your address, not a familiar city name
Ask whoever handles collection for your property to confirm your service, pickup day and cardboard instructions. If your home uses a shared collection area, ask the property manager where moving boxes belong and what to do when the container is full. Use the city and county resources below as starting points, not as permission to use any nearby bin or facility. Confirm access, current hours and any requirements before making a drop-off trip.
Orlando: flatten the boxes and skip the bag
The City of Orlando’s What Goes Where guide lists flattened cardboard boxes among accepted recyclables and tells residents to empty recycling directly into the cart rather than into plastic bags. For a home served by that city program, use those instructions as your starting point. Keep packing materials separate while you check the accepted-items list; the fact that something arrived inside a cardboard box does not answer where it belongs.

Tampa: a full cart is not a packed-tight cart
The City of Tampa’s recycling page says materials must be loose, not bagged. It also warns against jamming boxes into the cart because they can get stuck, and says to keep the lid down to prevent materials from getting wet. As you unpack, resist treating the cart like a compression challenge. If your boxes will not fit appropriately, ask the service provider about your options instead of assuming an extra stack beside the cart will be collected.

County service? Read the county instructions
Hillsborough County’s cardboard guide calls for clean, empty, dry material, with boxes emptied and flattened. It directs users to cut oversized cardboard into smaller sections to fit and also identifies a facility drop-off option. This is a separate county resource, not a substitute for the City of Tampa’s program instructions. Confirm which guidance applies to your property before choosing your next step.

Give the unpacking pile three destinations
Set aside sturdy boxes you actually want to keep or offer for reuse. Make a second space for prepared cardboard after checking your provider’s guidance. Keep foam, film and other packaging in a separate decision pile until you have checked each material. This sorting method is an organizational suggestion, not a promise that every item in a category will be accepted.
Choose a spot that does not block your normal passage through the home. Add one reminder for your first collection day and a separate reminder to confirm any drop-off plan. A short list on your phone is enough: provider, collection day, cardboard instructions, overflow question and the official page you checked.
Quick questions before the first pickup
Can I put the whole box in the cart with the packing materials still inside? Separate the materials first and check the provider’s instructions for each one. Orlando specifies flattened boxes; Hillsborough County says to empty and flatten them.
Does a recycling symbol settle the question? No. Tampa’s program specifically directs users to its accepted-items list rather than relying on a plastic resin number or a general recyclability claim.
What if I have more cardboard than space? Ask about an authorized overflow or drop-off option. Do not assume the next pickup includes loose piles, bulky packaging or another property’s shared container.
